When we talk of Middlesex where do we mean?
The County, the Province or the Tribal Lands?
It’s possible you didn’t even realise there is a choice!

It is Middlesex Day in...

Spelthorne

Welcome to the Borough of SPELTHORNE in south Middlesex

It was incorporated in 1974 by bringing together the Middlesex Urban Districts of Staines and Sunbury on Thames. Wraysbury is in Buckinghamshire but Middlesex is its postal County.

Spelthorne is a Middlesex ‘Hundred’ – a Hundred is an area at the heart of Saxon Local Government. Today’s Borough of Spelthorne bears a name rich with Middlesex heritage, but is not to be confused with the Hundred of Spelthorne which takes in the whole modern borough plus the parishes of East Bedfont, Feltham, Hampton, Hanworth and Teddington.

Did you know?

Staines was originally a Roman settlement called ‘Ad Pontes’ and was the point where the London to Silchester road crossed the River Thames.

The first factory in the world to manufacture Linoleum was set up in Staines in 1864.

Sunbury is the home of Kempton Park Racecourse and until recently, London Irish Rugby Club.

Shepperton is the home of the famous Shepperton Film Studios where such greats as ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ and ‘Star Wars’ were filmed.

Parts of what is now Spelthorne were featured in HG Well’s book ‘War of the Worlds’
